One Health
We are committed to a One Health approach to aquatic food production - that farming happens in harmony with the environment and that the food produced is healthy and nutritious. We include this approach in the work we are delivering with the seafood industry in the UK and in our projects in Africa and Asia.
>> Building from our delivery of the SeafoodMattersUK event held in Stirling in 2022, we have been working with partners in the food system in the local area to understand how poorer consumers can access seafood to support better health outcomes. We've partnered with food banks, the local food service training college, council and community groups to test innovative products that help increase consumption and lower the carbon footprint. At the national and international level we are also part of policy and research discussions about increasing the consumption of seafood, including through innovative product provision in food service outlets - e.g. adding oily fish into tuna mayo to increase Omega-3 fatty acid content and reduce the carbon footprint.
>> With RAD hubs in Uganda and with larger cage farming companies in Rwanda and Kenya we have been exploring the production of smaller fish to increase fish consumption amongst poor households (smaller fish have a lower price point, so people can afford them). We are also exploring the potential of fish powder to increase consumption that supports maternal health and early child development.
